TALK AUDIO – BlackAir II 10″ Review – Slot Ported Box

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Review written by ‘Pete’

i got a ten inch vibe black air and had put myself forward for putting it into a slot ported box. had the box running for about a week and a half with about 500 rms out of my old dragster amp, not the best amp i agree but im running a 12″ jl w3 normally so it was a good test to see how they compared at least if nothing else. big thanks to baz w for knocking up a box design as well as Mcc

after i finished playing with it i took the box apart panel by panel but heres a picture just to show the inside of the box,

i was already told before i made it that the vibe blackair two was better suited to a sealed design. initially on first listening i was very open minded to its sound as it obviously had to run in. it was being run via an alpine 7876 headunit with a pg basscube and a dragster da2002.

i listen to a very wide range of music too so it was in for a good test in terms of musical capability, after i felt it had run in a bit i tried testing it and listening to it on stuff i already new very well. it was tight surprisingly and dropped well although felt a bit one noted in some things with a bit of a sloppy response some times. it performed well with things that were slower and low, so rap and hip hop was quite well reproduced indeed. although things like 80′s rock etc wasnt so well reproduced, found on material like toto, chicago and zz top that it lacked the ability to hit those sharp drums like my w3 could

i tried it with soe test tones too, just burping it a bit to see how it could produce large amounts of bass, again this was pleasantly surprising that with only a little power that it could make plenty of noise and make my golf shake pretty well(obvioulsy my wing mirrors werent ready to come off but anyway)

i do feel this is partially down to the box too which is important to bear in mind. it was a good listen and for the money ( which really isnt very much) then this sub was impressive! i have to say the whole experience was a positive one and the sub left me feeling pleased with the amount of bass and the quality of reproduction it was capable of! liked the idea of a reconeable sub at this price but considering the initial price of this sub then the recone cost pretty much negates the fact that it is able to be done as im sure the recone would cost nearly as much as the speaker.

for under a hundred pounds this speaker has set a very good standard that other manufacturers should take note of and watch out for as this is IMO a step up from previous vibe equipment

these are my own views on how i felt the sub performed with what i tested it with .

TALK AUDIO – Blackair II 12″ Review

SwitchBlade:

So as not to clutter the 10″ thread I thought it best to start a sepparate thread for those of us with the 12″ sub to review.

So far I’ve only tried it in a sealed box getting about 400W RMS, the box was 1.5cuft and only just fit in my MR2. Video of box being made: here (2.1MB DivX format) In the car:

was very impressed with how loud and low the sub managed to go, surprised me a lot there. Musically I wasn’t too impressed, it handles long deep basslines very well but struggled to control faster bass changes resulting in a slightly muddy sound. Saying that it was slightly expected being a budget sub. One other thing I noticed was a mild buzzing noise to the bass, it wasn’t a vibration in the car or anything mechanical with the sub that I could make out but it seemed to have some slight buzz to it that I don’t get from my COMP8s at similar volumes. No doubt it was accentuated being 2 feet from my ear but it’s something I’ll listen for when building the other test boxes.

Build quality wise the sub looks and feels very well put together and sturdy. It also looks the part whichever way round you mount it on the box.

Tests to come are a smaller sealed box and a ported box as and when I’ve built them.

Out of the box the sub certainly looks the part, as others have commented, this sub certainly does not appear to be a
